Fall 2023, Arapaho National Forest, Colorado — When Anita and Drew reached out to plan their hiking and fishing elopement in Colorado, their photographer, Mountain Marta Photography, knew right away it was going to be an epic day. Anita and Drew met online and bonded over their shared love of hiking, biking, riding horses, and fishing. Now living in Texas, they raise cows and chickens, but their goal of hiking every national park together keeps their sense of adventure alive. Naturally, an adventurous hike on their wedding day was a perfect fit.

They had chosen a breathtaking alpine lake in Arapaho National Forest, and the adventure ahead was a 7-mile out-and-back hike, all in one day!

An Early Morning

They started their hike before dawn, under a sky full of stars. After signing the trail register, they made their way down the path, illuminated by headlamps as the first hints of sunlight began to creep in. Along the way, they passed a beautiful waterfall and were treated to a golden glow in a mountain meadow, just as the sun began to rise. As they continued, they wandered through groves of aspens still clinging to their fall colors.

Finally, after many miles, they arrived at the lake where Anita and Drew would exchange their vows. They took a break for snacks before changing into their wedding attire. They had some of the most unique details including a custom leather bouquet holder and ring box, designed with the topographic features of the lake and peak.

A Personal Ceremony

Once Anita and Drew were ready, they had an emotional first look, followed by the reading of letters and cards from their family. It was such a special way to feel their family's presence, even though they couldn’t be there in person.

This moment was significant to both of them. Their ceremony was peaceful and serene, with not another soul in sight. As they read their vows to each other, the surroundings made it all the more intimate and unforgettable.

Post-Ceremony Adventures

After the ceremony, they spent some time fly fishing—a hobby they both love. It added a playful, personal touch to their day, making it even more of an adventure elopement. They lingered by the lake for a while, enjoying the peaceful setting before heading back down the trail.

At the trailhead, they found a small lake with picnic tables, the perfect spot for Anita and Drew to cut their cake, pop some champagne, and exchange thoughtful gifts. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day!

Special Moments and Advice

One of the most emotional moments was reading the letters from their family. Even though their loved ones weren’t physically present, these heartfelt messages made them feel connected. This is something that is highly recommended for other couples—it’s a beautiful way to include family and make the day feel even more special.

For couples planning a similar hiking elopement in Colorado, here’s some advice: Prepare for high-altitude hiking by arriving a few days early to acclimate, and practice challenging hikes beforehand. Be ready for unpredictable weather, and always have backup plans in place. On this trip, their photographer carried a first aid kit, extra food, and water, and they all brought plenty of layers.

Anita and Drew’s location was special because it required a long hike. While there are plenty of stunning spots in Colorado that don’t involve a difficult trek, choosing a more remote location can make your wedding feel all the more unique—you might even exchange vows somewhere no other couple has before!
