Larry and Sabrina are high school sweethearts who decided to have a snowy pine-filled Colorado elopement at Hoosier Pass on their 9-year dating anniversary. One of Sabrina’s dogs is getting older, and it felt like the perfect idea to take a big trip together to create memories together. Neither of them has close family ties so an elopement was the best way they could capture their love. Colorado also is the complete opposite of their home state of Alabama. They chose Colorado because their sweet pups could sign on their marriage license, and because they knew Colorado would have snow in November!
Tips for a Winter Wedding in Colorado
1. Pick a location that's easy to access in winter:
One of the keys to this is to work closely with your photographer and/or planner. Colorado’s beauty really shines in the winter, but some spots can be tricky to get to because of snow. Make sure to choose a place that’s accessible. Some examples include locations at Rocky Mountain National Park, Sapphire Point, or Garden of the Gods. There are also ski resorts that offer breathtaking views and make it easier with on-site lodging and services. Some roads can be closed starting end of October and open back up in May so take that into consideration as well when planning your date and location.
2. Be prepared for unpredictable weather:
Winter weather can be a little all over the place. It’s important to have a backup plan in case things don’t go as expected with snow or wind. On a related note, think about long-sleeved dresses, faux fur wraps, or capes to stay warm and look amazing. Layers underneath your dress are a great way to stay comfortable outdoors without compromising on style. Also, don’t forget about footwear! Having winter boots with good traction is key for navigating any icy or snowy spots. Sabrina wore thick water proof boots under her dress!
3. Plan around golden hour:
Winter days are short, but the golden hour is beyond magical when the snow starts reflecting that gorgeous light. It’s highly recommended to plan your timeline to take advantage of that perfect pre-sunset glow for your photos.
4. Be mindful of the altitude:
Some of Colorado’s best spots are at higher altitudes, which can sneak up on you if you’re not used to it. Be sure to take it easy and stay hydrated—especially with all the excitement of the day!
